Fracking, Tremors and Quakes, Are They Related?

The annual conference of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists has been meeting to discuss the facts regarding induced earthquakes in Oklahoma. The scientists state that the quakes are closely related to deep injection wells that dispose of salty, toxic water that comes out of gas and oil wells. The biggest quakes that have hit the state have been at the far edges of the injection zones. Somehow the pressure created by the injection wells is pushing faults that are relatively far away. This is the third year that there has been study of injection induced seismicity at the annual conference of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. The science is still reaching for precision in its ability to predict how human activity will affect faults and create earthquakes.
