 Approximately thirty
miles east of Dallas, in Seagoville, Texas, an independently managed
and special environmental housing village called Ecology Housing
exists. Here, the air is cleaner, a vital factor for the healing
process. The well water on the property is filtered and free of
chlorine. Organic gardening is popular with residents. We, the
village management insist, that all residents with Environmental
Illness must be under a local doctor's care. The majority of these
residents are under the medical supervision of the staff at the
Environmental Health Center - Dallas.
To the newcomer the
outward appearance of the village lacks in "real-estate curb appeal."
However, from an ecological perspective our village is the best and
healthiest! Since we are allergic to most building materials, our units
are designed to be functional - not beautiful.
The numerous 30-gallon
metal trash containers, though unsightly, provide storage space for
valuable items that would otherwise contaminate our living areas. We
have learned to keep our environment as chemically free as possible.
The kitchen and laundry
facilities are open, which allows fresh air to circulate. This reduces
the accumulation of odors from foods cooking or machines operating.
We feel a "pioneering
spirit" here and accept the necessary changes in life style in order to
feel healthier, happier, productive and hopefully become more
compassionate as human beings.

Our community represents various phases of
experimental housing built over a period of twelve years specifically
for the chemically sensitive person. Each unit, updated in the interior
with porcelain, is lifted off the ground by skids or cement blocks to
allow proper circulation of air. This helps prevent mold and dampness,
which could cause severe reactions for individuals with those
sensitivities. The entire village is on septic tanks, therefore, we ask
that no sanitary napkins or paper towels be flushed in the toilets.
The units are made of porcelain, an inert,
non-reactive material. Each unit contains:
- Air Filter
- TV placed behind glass to prevent exposure to fumes
- Window air conditioners
- Space heaters
- All cotton bedding
- Sparse interior furniture conducive to healing, and
allowing the body to rid itself of toxins
