Successful Surgery and You

Dr. William J. Rea is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. His surgical background spans 40 years of surgical procedures involving many patients who possessed chemical sensitivities. Therefore, the Environmental Health Center is a leader in the field of understanding and developing correct surgical protocol for the chemically sensitive. This knowledge encompasses:

  • operating room
  • hospital room
  • implant materials
  • suture materials
  • local anesthetics
  • general anesthesia
  • skin preparation solutions
  • surgical tapes

Antibiotics, pain medications, and content of IV solutions are determined by knowledge of your individual sensitivities.

Care must be exercised in making excessive demands of the hospital’s operating procedures and its staff. Most hospitals will be understanding of your needs if they are presented in a spirit of compromise. Realistic alternatives to standard protocol must be presented. You may be denied access to the hospital of your choice if the hospital feels you present a treatment risk to them.

In many instances the hospital will allow you to use your own linens and pillow. Some even allow you to bring an air purifier. Some sensitive patients find isolation rooms acceptable.
